06/10/2023Google’s Pixel 8 trade-in offers: Google wants iPhone users to switch
Google has launched its new Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro smartphones, which come with impressive features such as the Tensor G3 chip, improved cameras and Android 14. However, if you are looking to upgrade from your old phone, you might be surprised by the trade-in offers that Google is giving on its own store.
One of the best things about Google’s trade-in offers is that they are very generous for older Pixel phones and iPhones. If you have a Pixel 4 or older, you can get up to $400 in credit for the Pixel 8 Pro, or up to $325 for the Pixel 8. That’s much more than what these phones are worth on the secondhand market.
Similarly, if you have an iPhone 13 or older, you can get up to $750 in credit for the Pixel 8 Pro, or up to $550 for the Pixel 8. That’s a great deal, especially if you want to switch from iOS to Android.
However, if you have a recent Pixel phone or a Samsung phone, you might be disappointed by Google’s trade-in offers. For example, the Pixel 7 Pro, which launched last year at $899, will only get you up to $420 in credit for the Pixel 8 Pro, or up to $325 for the Pixel 6. That’s less than what you would get for an iPhone 11, which is two years older and was not even a flagship.
The same goes for Samsung phones. The Galaxy S23 Ultra, which launched this year at $999, will only get you up to $650 in credit for the Pixel 8 Pro, or up to $550 for the Pixel 8. That’s less than what you would get for an iPhone 14 Pro, which is also a year older and has similar specs.
The worst trade-in offers from Google are for foldable phones and OnePlus phones. For instance, the Galaxy Z Fold 4, which launched this year at $1,799, will only get you up to $364 in credit for the Pixel 8 Pro, or up to $180 for the Pixel 8. That’s a huge loss of value for one of the most expensive and innovative phones on the market.
The same applies to OnePlus phones. The OnePlus 10 Pro, which launched this year at $999, will only get you up to $74 in credit for the Pixel 8 Pro, or up to $104 for the Pixel 8. That’s almost insulting for one of the best flagship killers of the year.
It’s not clear why Google is offering such inconsistent trade-in values for different phones. One possible reason is that Google is trying to attract customers who have older Pixels or iPhones, who might be more likely to upgrade to a new phone. Another possible reason is that Google is trying to avoid competing with Samsung and OnePlus, who might have better trade-in deals on their own stores.
However, these reasons do not justify the low trade-in values that Google is giving for some of the most popular and recent phones on the market. It seems like Google is not respecting its own loyal customers who bought its previous flagships, or its potential customers who might want to switch from other brands.
If you are not happy with Google’s trade-in offers on its store, you might want to look elsewhere for a better deal. For example, Best Buy is offering over $100 more than Google for both Pixel 7 devices when you buy a Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro. You can also check other retailers or carriers who might have different trade-in deals or discounts.
Alternatively, you can sell your old phone on the secondhand market and use the cash to buy a new Pixel phone. You might get more money than what Google is offering, especially if your phone is in good condition and has high demand.
Google’s new Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are great smartphones that offer many improvements over their predecessors. However, if you want to trade in your old phone for a new one, you might want to compare different options before settling for Google’s trade-in offers on its store. Some of them are good, some of them are bad and some of them are ugly.
